The mafic Curacautín ignimbrite of Llaima volcano, Chile

چکیده

Mafic volcanism accounts for 80% of magmas erupted on Earth. Although the majority these eruptions are effusive to Strombolian and fountain-fed, large explosive mafic do occur. This work uses deposits pyroclast textures from 12.6 ka Curacautín ignimbrite eruption Llaima volcano constrain conditions that drove this extrapolate findings provide insights into promote large-volume, elsewhere. The (Ci) consists four massive coarse ash lapilli tuff flow units; Unit 1 is at least 30 m thick in proximal exposures, Units 2–4 range 4 thick. New 14C dates field observations suggest Ci result a single eruptive episode ~12.6 ka. A lack fall presence abundant clast agglutination suggests was boil over event. We estimate tephra volume be between 6 9 km3 (equivalent 3.5–4.5 DRE), which less than previous estimates. Even with our lower estimate, still larger Masaya Triple Layer, Pucón ignimbrite, Tarawera 1886, Etna 122 BCE eruptions. Petrology and Oxygen Isotope Geochemistry of the Pucón Ignimbrite - Southern Andean Volcanic Zone, Chile: Implications for Genesis of Mafic Ignimbrites

Introduction: Although mafic components of dominantly intermediate to silicic ignimbrites are rather common, voluminous, dominantly mafic ignimbrites are rare (e.g., Smith, 1979; cf. Freundt and Schmincke, 1995). Volcán Villarrica, the most active composite volcano in South America, located in the Southern Andean Volcanic Zone (SAVZ, López-Escobar and Moreno, 1994a), has produced two such ignim...

PETROLOGICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL STUDY OF CRUSTAL XENOLITHS FROM 1961 ERUPTION OF CALBUCO VOLCANO, CHILE (LATITUDE 41 20 S )

Twenty four samples of xenoliths and country rocks from the 1961 lava flow of Calbuco volcano have been studied. Fourteen samples have been analyzed for major elements and P, Ni, Ba, Cr, V, Zr, Sc, Y, and Sr. Five of these samples were further analyzed for Sm, Nd, Sr, and Pb isotope ratios. Seventeen samples were analyzed under the microscope and three samples were analyzed by microprobe fo...

Reconstructing the plinian and co-ignimbrite sources of large volcanic eruptions: A novel approach for the Campanian Ignimbrite

The 39 ka Campanian Ignimbrite (CI) super-eruption was the largest volcanic eruption of the past 200 ka in Europe. Tephra deposits indicate two distinct plume forming phases, Plinian and co-ignimbrite, characteristic of many caldera-forming eruptions. Previous numerical studies have characterized the eruption as a single-phase event, potentially leading to inaccurate assessment of eruption dyna...

Effects of volcanic and hydrologic processes on forest vegetation: Chaitén Volcano, Chile

The 2008-2009 eruption of Chaitén Volcano (Chile) involved a variety of volcanic and associated hydrologic processes that damaged nearby forests. These processes included coarse (gravel) and fine (silt to sand) tephra fall, a laterally directed blast, fluvial deposition of remobilized tephra, a variety of low-temperature mass-movement processes, and a pyroclastic flow. Each of these geophysical...
